Medaglia d’Oro and Café Bustelo Brand History
Medaglia d’Oro History
While it was the Arabians that roasted and ground coffee beans for medicinal purposes, it wasn’t till around 400 years later that Italian engineer, Luigi Bezzera, patented the first espresso machine. Medaglia d’Oro has kept in line with traditional Italian brewing since it was founded in 1924.
Café Bustelo History
Another coffee with Mediterranean roots, Gregorio Menendez Bustelo, moved from Spain to the United States in 1917, after a stay in Cuba. In 1928, he founded Café Bustelo in New York. His coffee was extremely popular with Cuban exiles who weren’t keen on the idea of filtering coffee through the traditional sock.

The Final Verdict
There is no easy answer for which coffee brand is the best. For those who love variety, Café Bustelo is by far the superior choice for the range of ground coffees, capsules, and specialty coffees. Café Bustelo makes a notoriously strong coffee, perhaps even too much for some. Nevertheless, if you are a cream and sugar person, the intensity is tamed. On the other hand, if you are looking for a rich Espresso and don’t mind paying a little more, Medaglia d’Oro is for you.
