Francisco, the son was born on the estate and from a young age, helped his father to grow the coffee beans. During the Cuban revolution, Francisco and his family moved to Los Angeles and in 1967, continued with the family business. It is still run by his 4 children today.

    Café Bustelo History

Gregorio Menéndez Bustelo had a similar story. He also moved to the US from Spain after a stay in Cuba. Though he arrived a little earlier, in 1917, it was still the interest from Cuban exiles that encouraged him to begin Café Bustelo in 1928. Café Bustelo grew popular quickly because Cubans didn’t like the traditional method of coffee filtration.

    The Final Verdict

As these are both Cuban-style coffees, you will notice that the aroma and taste are similar. Both are very bold and for some, just the smell is enough to prepare you for that coffee hit we love and need. There might be a tiny difference in taste. You may find that Café La Llave has a hint of acidity, and this might be too much for some. As soon as you add cream or sugar, the boldness of both are tamed but we would recommend starting with Café Bustelo.
